U_CAN partners Dresden University of Technology and O.M. Beketov National University of Urban Economy (Kharkiv), in collaboration with the Polo Centre of Sustainability, have submitted the joint project "Cities of the Future: Development Innovations" (CFDI) for the third Open Call under the REINFORCING programme. This project takes a unique approach to addressing climate challenges in Ukrainian cities while supporting the critical reconstruction needs of the country through collaboration between Ukrainian and European experts.
The CFDI project aims to create a community of young professionals dedicated to developing innovative solutions for climate governance and sustainable smart cities. The involvement of EU partners provides Ukraine with access to expertise and knowledge exchange, forming a foundation for mutual learning and policy development. As part of the project, an online course will be developed, equipping participants with essential skills to address complex urban challenges.
Primary Objectives of the CFDI Initiative:
To support Ukraine’s integration into the European community in climate governance.
To advance Ukraine's post-war reconstruction through innovative climate governance and sustainable urban development approaches.
To enable multi-stakeholder engagement with partners within the EU Mission for "Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities."
Key Focus Areas:
Achieving Climate Neutrality: This initiative aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions across participating cities by incorporating energy-saving technologies and sustainable practices into urban frameworks, with the long-term goal of reaching climate-neutral targets and promoting ecological stability.
Smart City Solutions: By developing smart city frameworks and leveraging innovative technology, the project improves resource management and reduces environmental risks. It also includes five smart city pilot projects that can serve as models for other cities across Europe.
Scalable and Broad Impact: The models and methods developed in this project are adaptable for cities across Europe, extending the EU Mission’s objectives by inspiring further smart city initiatives and supporting sustainable development.
The project’s achievements will be valuable for cities aiming to achieve climate neutrality and integrate sustainable, EU-aligned solutions.
